Overview

Kick-start your career in electrotechnology trades with CQ University’s Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start). This course introduces learners to key safety practices and develops foundational skills and knowledge across electrotechnology disciplines.

Designed for Start TAFE Now (STN) high school students with no prior experience, it provides a practical pathway to build the capabilities needed for further training, including potential entry into an electrical apprenticeship.

This qualification covers competencies for work entry program providing grounding in safety and basic skills and knowledge for work in any electrotechnology discipline.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Start TAFE Now students will attend their chosen campus for one full day per week (7 hours) over 33 weeks, aligned with school terms, totalling 231 hours of training.

Students will engage in a combination of practical skills development, classroom-based learning, and self-paced online study.

This course has no residential schools.

Requirements

To help us understand how best to support you, you’ll need to complete the BKSB (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy, numeracy and digital literacy assessments to progress your application. Alternatively, completion of an equal or higher-level course may exempt you from this testing.

Start TAFE Now students must be commencing in Year 11 or 12.

Applicants must have achieved a pass in both:

  • English.
  • Mathematics.

Applicants who have completed higher level Mathematics, English and a Science subject may be given preference, as these subjects provide a strong foundation for success in electrotechnology.

Students must provide the following application documentation.

  • A personal statement from the student which includes their reason for interest in the course, current career goals/aspirations, and work experience (if applicable).
  • Most recent graded report card (must include reported behaviour, effort, and attendance)
  • Completed and signed Start Study Now Authorisation form

Acceptance of applications are merit based at the sole discretion of CQUniversity. 

Fees & Scholarships

Fee for Service/ Full Fee

Fee for Service/Full Fee occurs when the full tuition fee is charged to students. This may occur when the course is not included in government subsidy program/s or the student is not eligible for a government subsidy. These students are obligated to cover the entire cost. Co-Contribution and Co-Contribution Concessional Fee

Some government-funded training programs, such as Career Start and Career Boost, require students to contribute to the cost of their education through a co-contribution fee. This fee varies depending on the course and the student's eligibility for a concessional rate. Additional costs, such as uniforms and course resources, may also apply. As a high school student, you may be eligible for the Queensland Government’s VET in Schools (VETiS) program which is fee-free. Course specific costs may be applicable, an example would be high vis clothing and safety boots for trade courses. 

If you are currently enrolled in or have previously completed a VETiS funded course, you will not be eligible for future VETiS funding. 

Please carefully consider your training options before committing to a training course as this may exhaust your entitlement to further Queensland Government subsidised training. 

Students must have a genuine interest in pursuing a post school vocational occupation to receive VETiS funding.

Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control

Employer Based (VET Providers Only), On-campus, RPL/RCC/Credit

This program is delivered over a 4 year period where the student will attend off the job training at CQU for a period of 3 blocks of seven weeks, 1 block per year, 21 weeks in total and 1 block of 1 week for capstone finalization in their fourth year. All other times the student will be performing on the job with employer and completing an e-profile for work completed on the job and in line with competencies they have been taught or are being instructed in.
