This qualification is for indentured apprentices who are currently employed as an apprentice Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician.
This qualification covers competencies to select components, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain refrigeration systems and equipment that apply to food storage and preservation, and air conditioning and air distribution equipment in buildings and premises. It includes regulatory requirements for purchasing and handling refrigerants.
Competency development activities in this qualification are subject to regulations directly related to licencing. A relevant contract of training through an apprenticeship or relevant employment may be required to enable the application of the required knowledge and skills to on the job work activities and environments.
Refrigerant Handling Licence:
The achievement of the qualification meets the training components for the full national Refrigerant Handling Licence which is required to work on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment that carries the risk of a fluorocarbon refrigerant being emitted while decanting the refrigerant or manufacturing, installing, commissioning, servicing, maintaining or decommissioning refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Occupational Licence:
Additional and/or other conditions may apply in some jurisdictions subject to regulations related to refrigeration/air conditioning work. Practice in the workplace and during training is also subject to work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations.
Electrical Occupation Licence:
The achievement of this qualification with the core restricted electrical units meet the electrical regulatory requirements for related restricted electrical work in most state/territories. This is required to work on electrical installations which are designed to operate at voltages greater than 50 volt (V) alternating current (a.c.) or 120 V direct current (d.c.).
After completing the course, students will meet industry requirements for acquiring a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician qualification. They may then apply for a restricted electrical licence within 12 months.

This qualification is delivered as part of a four (4) year apprenticeship, combining face-to-face training at CQUniversity with on-the-job learning in the workplace. Students undertaking this course are indentured apprentices, meaning they are employed and training under a formal training contract between the apprentice, their employer, and CQUniversity.
Training by CQUniversity is delivered through a block format, with apprentices attending CQUniversity training facilities for 3 to 5 weeks at a time throughout the apprenticeship. The timing and duration of these blocks are guided by each apprentice’s individual training plan, developed in consultation with their employer and CQUniversity.
During these blocks, students receive hands-on, practical training in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, supported by experienced trainers and industry standard facilities. Between blocks, apprentices will continue to build their skills in the workplace, applying what they’ve learned in real-world settings under the supervision of their employer.
This blended delivery model ensures apprentices gain both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to become qualified tradesperson in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry upon completion.

On-campus training is conducted on the Rockhampton City Campus. Apprentices can be accepted throughout the year. Training dates are structured upon intake.
This course has no residential schools.
An Australian Refrigerant Trading Authority licence is required to be able to purchase refrigerant for the use in the training of the students, and CQ University already holds this licence as it was a condition of delivering for UEE32220 Certificate III in Refrigeration and Air conditioning that we have been delivering. As CQUniversity already holds the licence there are no additional licences required to deliver the UEE32225 Certificate III in Refrigeration and Air conditioning than already held.
To help us understand how best to support you, you’ll need to complete the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy, numeracy and digital literacy assessments to progress your application. Alternatively, completion of an equal or higher level course may exempt you from this testing.
Fee for Service/Full Fee occurs when the full tuition fee is charged to students. This may occur when the course is not included in government subsidy program/s or the student is not eligible for a government subsidy. These students are obligated to cover the entire cost. Learn more about Paying for TAFE.
Some government-funded training programs, such as Career Start and Career Boost, provide a contribution that reduces the cost of training. Eligible apprentices and trainees will be charged $1.60 per *nominal hour. Concession rates apply to eligible students based on provided evidence. If you are required to pay Student Contribution Fees, you may be eligible for partial or full exemption, you can find more information on Apply for TAFE Certificates and Diplomas. Learn more about eligible courses and funding eligibility criteria by visiting Career Start or Career Boost.
Free apprenticeships for under 25s covers the cost of training for employers who commence an eligible new or existing apprentice or trainee in a priority qualification. Learn more about eligible courses and funding eligibility criteria by visiting Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s.
Free Construction Apprenticeships for Over 25s are available for a range of construction and electrical apprenticeships which are aligned to state and nationally agreed priorities. The Queensland Government will cover the cost of training for eligible Queensland apprentices.
Some employers may optionally choose to sponsor all or part of a student’s full fees or co-contribution fees. Please carefully consider your training options before committing to a training course, as this may exhaust your entitlement to further Queensland Government subsidised training. CQUniversity is an approved Skills Assure supplier with the Government Department of Trade, Employment and Training.
*Nominal hours is a value assigned to a VET course or unit and nominally represents the anticipated hours of supervised training deemed necessary to conduct the training and assessment activities associated with the course or unit.
*Some qualifications require students to pay for additional items, for example, the cost of a uniform or other compulsory resources which are not included in free or subsidised enrolments.
