Recent Secondary Education

You are considered an applicant with recent secondary education, if, in the last two years you have:

  • recently completed your secondary education (high school), or
  • completed your senior secondary studies at TAFE or through a vocational education and training (VET) provider.

Thinking of applying?

As an applicant with recent secondary education, your admission to university will mainly be based on your high school results, your ATAR (if you received one), or other recognised qualifications that you completed while at school.

There is a lot of information available about studying at university, and at times, it can be hard to know where to start. We have listed below a few different scenarios that may apply to you, to help break down some of the admission information available.

I AM A...

As a current Year 12 student eligible for an ATAR your application will be considered for an offer based on your ATAR result (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional entry requirements.

If you are a current Year 12 student ineligible to receive an ATAR you may be assigned a selection rank based on your Year 12 study and will be considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional entry requirements.

Not sure if you're ready for uni?

You may be interested in our Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) program. This program is an ideal preparatory option that helps prepare you for university study.

As a current International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma student you will be assigned a selection rank based on your score from your completed IB Diploma. As agreed by admissions centres around Australia, the IB score is converted to a 'combined rank'. The combined rank is on the same scale as the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank). If you are an IB Diploma student you will be considered for an offer based on this combined rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional entry requirements.

Your results from Home Schooling, Accelerated Christian Education and other non-standard Year 12 programs (with SAT tests) may also be assigned a selection rank and you will be considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional entry requirements.

As an applicant with overseas Year 12 study, you can still apply to study a university course. CQUniversity will consider equivalent overseas Year 12 qualifications for admissions purposes.

English Language Proficiency

If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

If you have completed other recognised qualifications at school such as competency-based and graded AQF Certificates III and IV, diplomas, higher education study, and some creative arts qualifications (in the areas of music, dance, and speech), then you will also be assigned a selection rank. and you will be considered for an offer based on this selection rank.

HOW TO APPLY

APPLYING FOR AN UNDERGRADUATE COURSE

In most situations, you will apply to study with CQU via a Tertiary Admission Centre, such as QTAC, UAC, VTAC, or via our ApplyCQUni portal.

The TAC you apply via is dependent on the course that you would like to study and usually where you live (if applying to study online) or where you intend to study (if applying to study on campus).

You can view the application options available for each course on our course pages within the How to Apply section. You can also contact us to find out the best way to apply for your course of interest.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You can be assigned more than one selection rank, for study and experience you hold such as your Year 12 results, vocational education and training, higher education study and even your employment history. If you have been assigned more than one selection rank, you will generally be considered for admission based on the highest rank. Exceptions may apply to some courses and courses with additional entry requirements.

You are required to meet relevant subject pre-requisites for the course you are applying for. Subject pre-requisites can be satisfied by successful completion of Senior secondary subjects or equivalent.

Subject prerequisites are not generally able to be met through Certificate level study.

If your course of interest has additional entry requirements these must also be satisfied.
