Overview

Whether you are a current professional engineer seeking to expand your engineering practice into a new specialisation, or you hold an engineering degree and want to meet the accreditation requirements to practice as a professional engineer in Australia, CQUniversity's Master of Engineering will enhance your career. You will have the choice to develop your knowledge and skills in traditional engineering disciplines of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering as well as the flexibility to tailor your studies in specialist engineering applications such as structural or municipal engineering (civil), power, control, or communications engineering (electrical), and energy engineering or dynamics (mechanical). You will also have the option to deepen your discipline knowledge and contextualise your engineering practice to the rail, mining and infrastructure sectors, through the choice of electives.

The Master of Engineering allows you the opportunity to develop professional skills such as teamwork and communication while applying and further developing the theoretical knowledge you gained in your undergraduate study. If you are a practicing engineer, this is a versatile course that allows you to extend or expand your engineering practice.

This course begins with an introduction to Australian engineering practice, providing the opportunity to apply discipline knowledge and skills in an authentic project, in some cases with an industry mentor, and will help to prepare you for engineering practice. You will then complete an internship of a minimum of 300 hours to gain work experience required to meet the accreditation requirements of the course. If you have significant and recent engineering experience (at least 480 hours) you may opt out of this unit and choose an elective unit as an alternative.

Depending on your choice of elective units, you will study one or two units from topics including sustainability, mining, project management and rail providing the opportunity to contextualise your learning to your current or preferred industry. Finally, you will complete a major research project that will demonstrate your ability to work as a professional engineer.

For domestic students, this course is also available in online study mode, giving you the flexibility to study even if working or living in a remote location.

Study a Master of Engineering

Transcript

The Master of Engineering program that we offer places a lot of emphasis on the type of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary skills set that our prospective employers actually seek in our graduates and this is something that we have embedded very successfully in the classroom.

The Master of Engineering offers majors in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Students have an opportunity to spend a lot of time practically in several types of laboratory-based environments.

We also take them out on field trips.

I really learned and enjoyed a lot of things here. I'm a technical student and I enjoy doing labs, projects and lot more group work with different students because I learnt how to do teamwork and I learned how to talk in front of different people, and I learned how to do the presentations, do the reports, and laboratories, in fact, we're sitting in one of the labs I've worked in before.

The Master of Engineering is delivered by a group of academics who hold PhD’s in their chosen disciplines. We have several academics who are also affiliated to their individual discipline related professional bodies.

One of the key aspects of the Master of Engineering course is all students have to undertake a mandatory 12-week industry placement. During these 12 weeks internship, our students work as full-time engineers in a nominated industry.

We have 60 to 75 different internship providers who work very closely with us.

The main benefit of the ongoing partnerships that we have with our internship providers is we have successfully placed a lot of students on paid part-time or full-time employment before they graduated.

I was offered a scholarship from CQUniversity and during my degree CQUniversity helped me find my internship. At the end of my first year, which was my first internship, and at the end of my second year, CQUniversity found me a second internship through which I was offered a job and I've been working there ever since.

We have companies such as Holcim, Boral and BHP who have offered full time employment to our graduates. Our graduates are able to find employment in a diverse range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, energy, transportation and maintenance.

As a mechanical engineer, I always want to look at myself as a leading engineer in an organisation where I can plan and develop certain projects, which is useful for the real world. And, if I want to take up a project or if I'm designing something, I always want to see how useful it is to the world and for the sustainable living at this point.

My career aspirations are yet to be solidified. Since coming to CQUniversity has broadened my visions on what I can become as an engineer in manufacturing, mining and teaching sectors. I know that wherever I go and whatever I do, CQUniversity has enabled me to become the best version of myself.

Engineering is all about innovation and creativity. It's all about problem solving. So, until one understands what the problem is, the problem cannot be solved.

Career Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the Master of Engineering, you will be recognised as a graduate professional engineer in Australia. As an engineer, you will realise career opportunities in a wide range of industries including energy, infrastructure, resources.

Possessing a Masters qualification will enhance your employability and elevate you above your engineering peers.

Structure & Availability

COURSE STRUCTURE

You are required to complete a total of eight units plus a major research project (96 units of credit) to be awarded the Master of Engineering. You will have the option of the following majors:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

All international students, regardless of previous experience, will be required to complete an internship in Australia in order to give them the experience of working in Australia in an engineering workplace:

Students who complete the full-time internship will be deemed to have satisfied the Engineers Australia requirements

Students who complete a part-time internship will have to make up the remaining hours in other professional practice activities. Engineers Australia has indicated this is acceptable to them but we will require students to provide a log in the university required format of these activities.

Please note that students who have not completed the requisite work experience will not be able to graduate from the course.
