Shaun Govaars is only 17, but he’s already accelerating his career in the automotive industry by securing an apprenticeship, thanks to his drive and CQUniversity’s TAFE training.

The Cathedral College Year 11 student’s road to success started when he heard about CQU’s Start TAFE Now program, which offered him the chance to study a Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation while still at school.

“I have always had a passion for automotive. I enjoy being able to hear a problem on a vehicle and being capable of finding the problem and then resolving that problem,” Shaun said.

He said the Start TAFE Now program also ignited his desire to learn beyond the four walls of the traditional classroom.

“I really struggled to find joy in going to school Monday to Friday so when I had the opportunity to partake in work experience in many different trades I jumped straight on it,” he said.

“For a while I was considering what trade I wanted to take on as I was working with auto electricians during work experience, but after I had a week of working side by side with a tradesman at Milne Bros I was certain that I was going to become a heavy diesel mechanic.”

And Shaun certainly pursued that goal, with his skills and dedication earning him a heavy vehicle mechanic apprenticeship with Wideland Group Central Isuzu Rockhampton.

“I have now been a school-based apprentice since March. I work every Tuesday, while still participating in the automotive program at CQU TAFE every Thursday and I love every minute of it,” he said.

“The TAFE program is a great opportunity for young people that want to find their future as it gives you a look into the trade as well as teaching you skills that you are able to use in your everyday life.

“I believe every young person that is offered the opportunity to take part in any TAFE program should take it as a great way to find out what you want to do with your future whilst learning valuable life skills that you will carry with you forever.

“I hope and plan on staying in the Job at Isuzu and become fully qualified.”

Wideland Group Central Isuzu Rockhampton Service Manager Robert Young congratulated Shaun on his apprenticeship.

“We’re thrilled to see passionate young people like Shaun taking the wheel towards a rewarding career in the heavy vehicle industry. His enthusiasm and commitment are exactly what make our team so strong,” Mr Young said.

“Apprenticeships like Shaun’s provide invaluable hands-on experience, combining technical learning with real-world application.

“Congratulations, Shaun, we’re proud to have you as part of the Wideland Group family and can’t wait to see where your journey takes you.”
