RPL FAQs
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) also known as Skills Assessment is an assessment process allowing individuals to achieve all, or part, of a nationally recognised qualification by demonstrating their knowledge, skills and experience around a particular topic.
If you have current skills and knowledge, but are not employed, you can apply for RPL. However if a workplace observation is required this may occur at a CQUniversity Campus or another suitable location negotiated with your RPL assessor. Volunteer work in the industry you are seeking your RPL may assist in generating evidence to satisfy the RPL process.
The length of time you have been working for an organisation may not be sufficient evidence to satisfy the RPL process. You must demonstrate that you have the skills required to meet the standard set by industry. Developing new skills in your workplace is also important and regular training should be undertaken.
CQUniversity regularly works with RPL clients via various mediums such as video conference, phone, email and mail. If formal training is required to complete your qualification, the RPL team at CQUniversity will work with you in providing the best option to suit your requirements.

Some candidates achieve partial qualifications of one or two units of competency to suit their employment or career goals.
Yes, your skills and knowledge are recognised irrespective of where you learn those skills. You do not have to attend formal training. There is no age requirement however you will need to demonstrate that you have skills and knowledge (work experience) in the area you are seeking your RPL and that the skills and knowledge you have are current. If you have not worked in the industry for a few years, you may not be able to demonstrate currency.

Once we have received your application, we forward this to an RPL Assessor who on receipt of your file will contact you within three days to make a suitable time to discuss your ability to undertake RPL and negotiate a Skills Plan. The Skills Plan will then trigger your enrolment. Once enrolment is confirmed, the assessment phase can commence and is conducted as per the Skills Plan (negotiated between all parties). If all required information and sufficient and valid evidence has been provided, this phase can be completed in six to eight weeks. However, if there is insufficient evidence and workplace visits cannot be conducted during this period, the assessment phase may take longer.
The assessment phase does not cover formal training. This will need to be completed as per the normal course offerings or as negotiated with the Manager of Vocational Training.
We need to document your journey to gaining skills and knowledge and verify that this is true and correct. It is also essential that we address all aspects of the qualification.
