This qualification reflects the role of individuals in the community, home or residential care setting who work under supervision and delegation as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

These individuals take responsibility for their own outputs within the scope of their job role and delegation. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.



This is a nationally recognised accredited course.

The Maraway, located in Cairns, have a third-party agreement with CQUniversity for this course. CQUniverstiy is responsible for the course and issuance of qualifications. The Maraway conduct training, assessment and recruitment on behalf of CQUniversity. The Maraway will also assist you with your application, including obtaining a Unique Student Identifier (USI) if you do not have one.

Duration:

This program can take up to 12 months to complete. Students may complete this course sooner if they are currently working in industry as a support worker  or have increased capacity to participate in their study.

Initial unit enrolments include: 

  • CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people,
  • CHCLEG001 Work legally and ethically, and
  • CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health or community services

Students are advised to not enroll into any further units at this point. 

If you have previously completed any of the above units, you may be eligible for credit transfer.

Credit transfer is when you have previously completed equivalent competencies or learning outcomes (via formal learning) in the same or similar field in which they are currently studying.

Residential schools for this course are conducted on campus in Bundaberg, Gladstone, Mackay City, Rockhampton North and Townsville.


Throughout the duration of this course, students will be required to undertake 2 blocks of residential schools: 1 x 1-day block and 1 x 3-day block, at a campus of their choosing (see the More Details section of the Handbook for the 2024 dates). 


**Residential school dates will be confirmed by your teacher in accordance with your commencement intake and course progression.  Students are advised to confirm dates with their teach prior to making travel and personal arrangements.


 

Vocational placement of at least 120 hours is required and is organised by CQUniversity.  A vocational placement competency logbook must be signed off to confirm essential skills gained. If the student is employed as a support worker, they may be eligible to complete the 120 hours in their workplace.

To determine the students’ eligibility to complete the vocational component in their workplace or a placement arranged by the CQU Work Integrated Learning (WIL) team, a placement application form will be required to be completed by all students undertaking this course. 

For vocational placement, students must undergo compulsory pre-placement requirements as outlined in the Mandatory Checks Requirements.

Requirements

Completion of the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

There are no other entry requirements for this qualification.
