Standard Course Structure
Duration:The nominal duration of the bricklaying apprenticeship is considered to be 48 months, however the expected duration is 42 months.
To achieve a reasonable rate of progression and completion within the expected duration (42 months) it is anticipated an apprentice would achieve 25% of all competencies required for the qualification within every 10.5 month period of the apprenticeship.
Ultimately the rate of progression of an apprentice will depend largely on the following factors:
1. Time spent by the apprentice being trained on-site in actual bricklaying tasks (i.e., not just labouring)
2. Employers range of work
3. Apprentice (individual) natural ability learning/mastering the skills required
To a lesser extent the time spent completing face-2-face training in an off-site simulated environment will also be relevant – but this is mainly related to learning practical skills and building knowledge regarding construction techniques that the apprentice is not readily exposed to on-site. For example, masonry arches are rarely used in modern building design, and therefore construction techniques and related skills will be developed and taught pre-dominantly during off-site, face-2-face training.
