Overview

Whether you are a current professional engineer seeking to expand your engineering practice into a new specialisation, or you hold an engineering degree and want to meet the accreditation requirements to practice as a professional engineer in Australia, CQUniversity's Master of Engineering will enhance your career. You will have the choice to develop your knowledge and skills in traditional engineering disciplines of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering as well as the flexibility to tailor your studies in specialist engineering applications such as structural or municipal engineering (civil), power, control, or communications engineering (electrical), and energy engineering or dynamics (mechanical). You will also have the option to deepen your discipline knowledge and contextualise your engineering practice to the rail, mining and infrastructure sectors, through the choice of electives.

The Master of Engineering allows you the opportunity to develop professional skills such as teamwork and communication while applying and further developing the theoretical knowledge you gained in your undergraduate study. If you are a practicing engineer, this is a versatile course that allows you to extend or expand your engineering practice.

This course begins with an introduction to Australian engineering practice, providing the opportunity to apply discipline knowledge and skills in an authentic project, in some cases with an industry mentor, and will help to prepare you for engineering practice. You will then complete an internship of a minimum of 300 hours to gain work experience required to meet the accreditation requirements of the course. If you have significant and recent engineering experience (at least 480 hours) you may opt out of this unit and choose an elective unit as an alternative.

Depending on your choice of elective units, you will study one or two units from topics including sustainability, mining, project management and rail providing the opportunity to contextualise your learning to your current or preferred industry. Finally, you will complete a major research project that will demonstrate your ability to work as a professional engineer.

Studying a Master of Engineering - Testimonial from Quang Dieu Nguyen

Transcript

Quang Dieu Nguyen

It's not only about personal growth, it’s also given me a chance to make a big impact on society.

My name is Quang Dieu Nguyen, I'm from Vietnam. I am studying the Master of Engineering at CQUniversity.

Through my research, I discovered that CQU is a highly esteemed institution.

After two years of mechanical engineering in Japan, I recognise that I need to upgrade my mechanical skill and management skills as well, I decided to study the Master of Engineering.

I think it boosts me to improvement for a career path in the future.

My friends took the English course at CQU and they gave me some good feedback. So, I also signed up for a short English course for better preparation to study in my major.

I was very satisfied with that course because it made me better and improve my English.

After consulting about curriculum at CQU, I was impressed with the subjects and their quality.

I think the subject and skills will help me open doors to a wide range of career opportunities.

I really am excited and satisfied when I pass a term. Each time I pass an assignment, I feel like I have a better grasp and understanding for what I have just learned.

The best thing I love in CQUniversity is the support service, because I have received support very quickly and fulfilling.

I really love the small classes because it’s easier to contact with my classmates and my lecturer, and it’s easier to ask any questions.

I have experience living in the big cities like Ho Chi Minh city. Rockhampton is just a regional city, but I love it because it’s natural, and not hot and not cold.

So, I think this country is the ideal destination for us to pursue our educational goals.

At CQU, I have received a lot of value, not only in changing academic or professional experience but also from the culture of friends from all over the world.

If you are considering studying a master degree in engineering at CQU, I feel this course is very logical, practical and suitable for engineering in the future.

It makes you gain a significantly cutting-edge success in your career path.

I chose to study at CQU because I wanted to work as a professional engineer. Being a recipient of the Australia Awards Scholarship was a wonderful opportunity. There was a lot I wanted to change in terms of women in engineering and the issues we face in my country.

Possessing a Masters qualification will enhance your employability and elevate you above your engineering peers.

Structure & Availability

COURSE STRUCTURE

You are required to complete a total of eight units plus a major research project (96 units of credit) to be awarded the Master of Engineering. You will have the option of the following majors:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

All international students, regardless of previous experience, will be required to complete an internship in Australia in order to give them the experience of working in Australia in an engineering workplace:

Students who complete the full-time internship will be deemed to have satisfied the Engineers Australia requirements

Students who complete a part-time internship will have to make up the remaining hours in other professional practice activities. Engineers Australia has indicated this is acceptable to them but we will require students to provide a log in the university required format of these activities.

Please note that students who have not completed the requisite work experience will not be able to graduate from the course.
