Overview
Make a difference through education and inspire future generations by studying the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at CQUni. The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is an initial teacher education course suitable if you already hold a non-education three-year bachelor degree and wish to become a secondary school teacher.
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) will enable you to teach across two teaching areas. This will include a major teaching area (Years 7-12) and a minor teaching area (Years 7-10). These teaching areas are based on your already completed non-education undergraduate degree with a set number of units completed within that degree qualification.
You will complete a professional placement unit in each term of your course commencing with 10 days of observation visits in a range of learning settings in your first term and 20-day placements in each subsequent term based on a full-time study load.
In addition to building the professional knowledge and skills required to teach, the course is designed to foster dispositions for engaging in and contributing to the teaching profession through a commitment to ongoing professional learning.
The design of this course utilises CQUniversity’s three-term structure, therefore a two-year volume of learning masters course can be fast-tracked to be completed in one and a half years when you commence in Term 1. A part-time pathway is also available and is to be completed as per the part-time course planner.
This course can only be studied within Australia and you must be in a location where you can access, or travel to, up to two school sites for the in-school practicum within the course.

Career Opportunities
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is an initial postgraduate pre-service teacher education course for those who aim to pursue a career as a secondary school teacher. Graduates are qualified to teach in two discipline teaching areas.
Graduates of the course can apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.
Graduates are qualified to teach in State, Catholic and Independent schools throughout Australia.
The course is also recognised as a teaching qualification for employment in educational settings internationally, however additional requirements may apply in some locations.
Graduates of this course have developed significant skills that enhance employment opportunities in other sectors. In combination with work experience and personal qualities, graduates may pursue employment in a variety of career paths including:
- government departments (e.g. family services, education and health)

Structure & Availability
Course structure
You are required to complete 15 core units. Your studies will provide you with two teaching areas:
- Major Teaching Area (includes a Year 11-12 subject PLUS the corresponding Year 7-10 curriculum area)
- Minor Teaching Area - Year 7-10 only
Students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) course are expected to undertake and meet the benchmark in the personal Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). These two tests (one literacy and one numeracy) are part of the accreditation requirements of this course and there is an expectation that students enrolled in an ITE course will be undertaking the tests and successfully meet the benchmarks prior to graduation. Fees & Scholarships
Indicative First-Year Fee
The Indicative First-Year Fee is the approximate cost of enrolling in this course for one full-time academic year (eight units over two terms) depending on the type of place you are offered, for example, a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) or Full Fee Paying (FFP) Place. The indicative fee provided should be used as a guide only. Your actual fees may vary, depending on the units you select to study and your study load. Commonwealth Supported Places
With Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) available for this course in 2024, you may be eligible for significant fee savings, provided you meet CSP eligibility requirements. CSPs are subsidised by the Australian Government, meaning you are only required to pay the student contribution rather than full tuition fees.
If you are not eligible for a CSP or if CSPs are full, you will be required to pay full fees.
HECS-HELP Loan
You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP government loan if you are offered a CSP. HECS-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that assists you in paying your student contributions. Provided you meet the HECS-HELP eligibility criteria, you may use HECS-HELP to defer part or all of your student contribution fees.
Part of your course costs will include Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF). SSAF is charged in addition to your student contribution or tuition fees and is used to help enhance your study experience.
