Donate to Gumbi Gumbi Traditional Medicine Research

At the heart of Australia grows a powerful plant—Gumbi Gumbi (Pittosporum angustifolium), a native species cherished by First Nations people for generations as a medicinal remedy.
Now, at CQUniversity, we are unlocking the plant’s remarkable healing properties through modern scientific research, with the potential to benefit many.
Led by Dr. Mani Naiker from CQUniversity's Bioactive and Functional Foods Research Group, in collaboration with Ghungalu Elder Uncle Steve Kemp, our research explores Gumbi Gumbi's antioxidant and cancer-fighting properties. By blending Indigenous knowledge with advanced scientific techniques, we’re finding new ways to improve health outcomes.
Through in-depth research, we’ve identified potent antioxidants in the leaves and fruit of the Gumbi Gumbi plant. These antioxidants protect the body from harmful free radicals, and our early studies show promising cytotoxic effects on cancer cells—opening doors to potential natural treatments.
By supporting our research, you can make a difference for communities, researchers, and the future of Indigenous medicine.
This important work cannot continue without your help. By donating to the CQUniCares Appeal, you will fund vital research into Gumbi Gumbi, allowing us to further explore its health benefits and develop new treatments. Together, we can empower researchers to make meaningful contributions to Indigenous knowledge and health science.
For Elder Uncle Steve Kemp, Gumbi Gumbi holds a deep, personal connection.
“My father used to tell me, ‘That plant there is medicine.’ He understood not just the tree but the land, the soil, and how everything worked together to make the plant more potent. Now, CQUniversity’s research is proving what our Elders have known for generations.”
By supporting this research through the CQUniCares Appeal, you are contributing to a legacy that honours the deep connection between the land, the people, and the traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Together, we can unlock the full potential of Gumbi Gumbi and ensure a healthier future for all.
Your donation will help us continue this essential work—exploring new treatments, preserving Indigenous knowledge, and fostering collaboration between researchers and communities.
Together, we can make a lasting impact on the future of health and well-being.
