Strengthening Research Capacity and Control in First Nations Communities
About the Research Project
Historically, First Nations people’s experience with research has been one of exploitation and unethical practices. Over time, reform is focused on First Nations people initiating research based on their needs and priorities. The conduct of research needs to be informed by First Nations values and ways of knowing, being and doing through community led or directed research.
National ethical guidelines for research with First Nations people assist researchers, communities and other stakeholders with principles to ensure rigorous and culturally responsive research design and approach to research.
Organisations and communities require a means to direct researchers on requirements and expectations regarding engagement and conduct in research with First Nations peoples. First Nations organisations and communities are developing their own research strategies informed by guidelines but specific to their local context. However, not all organisations and communities have the capacity to develop such strategies or have access to those with experience to assist them. Providing a generic template as a guide will assist organisations and communities to independently develop their strategies or work with those with experience to assist them.
Impact
- To prepare a First Nations Research Strategy template which can be adapted for use by individual organisations and communities.
- Using the template, work with an organisation/community to develop their research strategy and adapt/improve the template as necessary based on the organisation/community experience and outcome.
