Bundaberg Makerspace

Community. Equity. Participation. Pathway.
Established in 2020, the CQUniversity Makerspace at the Bundaberg campus is a vibrant, hands-on learning space designed to foster creativity, innovation, and technical skills. It is equipped with a variety of tools and technology, including drones, virtual reality, coding kits, micro:bit, 3D printers, laser cutters, and robotics like Ozobots, Bee-Bots, LEGO®, iRobot and Dash.
The CQU Makerspace is primarily an education makerspace that offers workshops for local school students from Prep to Year 12, CQUniversity students, and the wider community. These workshops focus on creativity, design, and technology, providing participants with opportunities to explore and develop digital literacy skills. Our goal is to inspire an interest in STEAM, which includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, while demonstrating how these skills connect to different school subjects and real-world applications.
Our Research
Our research project focuses on helping participants build their digital literacy and STEAM skills while also supporting teachers in guiding participants' learning in these areas. By working in the makerspace, participants and teachers engage with technology in interactive and practical ways. The project also explores students', teachers', and parents' thoughts and experiences with STEAM education to find the best ways to support and encourage engagement in makerspace activities, digital literacy and STEAM learning.
Participant surveys: We use research-validated surveys to investigate makerspace participants’ STEAM-related beliefs, values, and motivations. We have developed experiments prioritising rigour and reliability, and we are dedicated to upholding the integrity and validity of our results.
Qualitative studies: We use a variety of qualitative methods to explore the STEAM-related perceptions and experiences of students, teachers, and parents.
