Sonography student has big praise for Perth study experience

Twenty-year-old Perth student Hayley Burton has always dreamt of a career in the health industry' but it was her developing technical skills in high school and a desire to help people that steered her into the field of medical sonography at CQUniversity.

"I went by the motto that there will always be jobs in the health sector as the population ages'" explained Hayley.

"During school' I was always rather good at using and controlling technology to help me through my studies.

"These two aspects led me to choose medical sonography which combines hands-on technology and helping people."

Hayley said she decided on CQUniversity as her first preference as it was the only course of its type in Perth.

"Nowhere else in Perth offered this course which made it all the more unique and interesting."

Jumping into online study in the first year of her degree required motivation and determination but Hayley said she coped well despite being straight out of school.

"I found that I had maintained my study habits and since I have thoroughly enjoyed second and third-year study with regards to the practical. There has been plenty of opportunity to get hands on with the machine as well as a few clinical placements."

CQUniversity Perth CBD campus was also a drawcard for Hayley who said it was an easy train ride from home.

She also loved the fact her class sizes were smaller' providing her an opportunity to develop close friendships with peers who shared common interests and goals.

Hayley has just embarked on a 10-week work placement block and has recently started work as an assistant sonographer.

"CQU has given me the ability to get a well recognised degree in a highly sought after career'" she said.

"Not only have I made great friendships' but I have also learned from some very knowledgeable tutors who have taught me loads.

"I am on the road to becoming a fully qualified sonographer with lots of clinical experience' knowledge and enjoyment for the career."
