CQCM students set to fire up audiences with Little Shop of Horrors performances
CQUniversity Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music's (CQCM) Bachelor of Theatre students will present five hilariously thrilling performances of the horror/comedy/rock musical Little Shop of Horrors from 22-24 October 2021.
With script by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken' the smash Broadway hit follows the story of an unassuming florist shop worker who raises a blood-thirsty carnivorous plant.
Seymour Krelborn' the meek floral shop assistant' happens upon a strange plant' which he affectionately names 'Audrey II' after his own love interest.
Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice' a potty mouth' and an unquenchable thirst for human blood.
As Audrey II grows bigger and meaner' the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour as long as he continues to provide a fresh supply of blood.
Seymour discovers Audrey II's extra-terrestrial origins and its true drive for world-domination' but is it too late?
CQUniversity Head of Course in Theatre Dr Linda Lorenza said the students are thrilled to be bringing the electrifying 1960s Broadway hit to Mackay.
"As the Australian arts industry struggles in the wake of COVID-19' the opportunity for our students to perform live on stage is a privilege for which the students are extremely grateful'" Dr Lorenza said.
"We are lucky enough to work under the guidance of our guest director' Brisbane-based director/choreographer Maureen Bowra' who specialises in directing the upcoming generation of performers.
"Ms Bowra is relishing the energy and focus of the theatre students in this production that incorporates singing' dancing' acting' and puppetry."
Ms Bowra said' "This show is a deliciously dark comedy' one of my absolute favourites' so I am extremely honoured to be directing this piece."
"Working with the students here has been a delight and they impress me every day with their dedication and talents.
"Putting together a major musical is no easy job and they are certainly rising to the challenge!
"This is a really slick production with plenty of heart' I can't wait for audiences to come and experience this terrifying (and hilarious) show."
These delectable performances will be held at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Building 21) at the CQUniversity Mackay Ooralea Campus' 150 Boundary Road' Ooralea.
