CQCM presents Xanadu
CQUniversity's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music's (CQCM) Bachelor of Theatre students will present five performances of the musical comedy Xanadu from Friday' 17 June.
The production' which opened on Broadway in 2007' is based on the 1980 movie starring Olivia Newton-John.
The musical' much like the movie' follows the journey of beautiful' magical Greek muse' Kira' who descends to Venice Beach' California' seemingly direct from the heavens of Mount Olympus.
Kira has a quest - to inspire struggling artist' Sonny Malone' to create the first ever roller disco.
He is also inspired to create 'Xanadu'' a gift so wondrous no one knows what it is.
The soundtrack from the original movie' performed by Olivia Newton-John and the Electric Light Orchestra' became an instant world-wide hit and these songs still captivate today.
Magic' All Over the World' Suddenly' I'm Alive' Evil Woman' Have You Never Been Mellow' and' of course' Xanadu are just a few of the memorable songs.
Music and lyrics are by Jeff Lynne with the book by Douglas Carter Beane.
CQCM Director Professor Judith Brown said Brisbane-based director/choreographer Dale Pengelly was this production's guest director.
"Dale will create a fabulous satire of this film in his seventh full-length production for CQUniversity'" Professor Brown said.
"He is relishing the energy and focus of the CQUniversity theatre students in a production that incorporates singing' dancing' acting and roller-skating!"
Dale said his curiosity 'was spiked' when he was asked to direct this production.
"We have created miracles for our patrons….and did I mention the roller skating? It's all in there!"
The performances will take place in the CQCM Ooralea Theatre (Building 21)' 150 Boundary Rd Ooralea.
"This quirky musical' with its fantastic 1980s score by the iconic Electric Light Orchestra' has been a joy to re-create with this group of enthusiastic and talented performers'" Professor Brown said.
Tickets can be purchased from the CQCM website or by calling 4940 7801.
