Bundy student makes final of discus at World Uni Games in Korea

15 July 2015

Congratulations to Bundaberg region Exercise and Sports Sciences student Taryn Gollshewsky who reached the final of the women's discus during the World Uni Games in South Korea this month.

Taryn hopes attending the World University Games will be a positive step towards the Olympic Games in Rio next year.

The 22-year-old from Elliott Heads near Bundaberg, achieved the World Uni Games discus qualification standard of 52.61m five times while competing within Australia.

She finished her domestic athletics season recently with a silver medal at the 93rd Australian Athletics Championships and a season best distance of 57.41m.

In recognition of her achievements, Taryn gained CQUniversity sponsorship towards the costs of travel to the FISU (International University Sports Federation) 28th Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Korea.

Since beginning her degree in 2011, Taryn has managed to gain podium results at the Australian Uni Games in 2011, 2012 and 2013, competing across discus, shot put and heptathlon.

She has also shown she can be competitive at international meets, including the World Youth and World Junior Championships and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Her personal best discus result of 58.24m was set in the qualifying round at the Commonwealth Games. She went on to place ninth in the final.

Taryn has shown plenty of consistency in her main sport, being national age champion for discus nine consecutive times. She represented Australia for the first time at age 15.

She is currently the second-ranked discus thrower in Australia, behind the 2014 Commonwealth Games champion.

Taryn has been juggling her Uni study and discus training with full-time work as a school teacher aide.

This continues her track record of success on many fronts as, during high school, she made various Queensland teams, shadow teams and squads for soccer, volleyball and athletics.

She continues to play soccer in the local Bundaberg competition and spends her 'downtime' kiteboarding, surfing, snorkelling and swimming.
