Free lunch, casual chat, meaningful connection
A new CQUniversity Rockhampton initiative is creating a welcoming space where students can connect over a free lunch, build friendships, and access support for their studies.
The ALC Lunch & Chat Club, an initiative of CQUniversity's Academic Learning Centre (ALC), brings students together in an informal and inclusive environment where conversation, connection, and a shared meal are at the heart of the experience.
Open to students from all year levels and study disciplines, the initiative focuses on fostering a strong sense of belonging, wellbeing, and inclusion while providing an accessible point of connection for students who may be experiencing financial pressures, social isolation, or challenges navigating university life.
CQUniversity Lecturer and Head of the Academic Learning Centre, Anne Braund, said the initiative acknowledges that students often face challenges beyond the classroom.
"University students can experience a range of pressures, including the rising cost of living, balancing paid employment with study and placement commitments, and adjusting to new academic and social environments," Ms Braund said.
"ALC Lunch & Chat Club provides a welcoming space where students can connect with others, share experiences, and feel supported throughout their studies."
CQU ALC Lecturer Dr Portia Simelane is helping facilitate the initiative with Nursing Senior Lecturer Dr Chanchal Kurup and Senior Lecturer in the School of Access Education Dr Gemma Mann, and said the club was designed to be a relaxed and inclusive space for all students.
"There is no expectation for students to arrive with a problem or a question," Dr Simelane said.
"They can simply come along, enjoy a meal, meet other students, and have a conversation."
"Sometimes meaningful support begins with something as simple as sitting down together over lunch and asking, 'How are things going?'" Dr Kurup said.
While the ALC offers formal academic support sessions to CQUniversity students on campus and online, the ALC Lunch & Chat Club is an informal bridge between students and the University's broader support network.
Dr Simelane said the initiative aligns closely with the Academic Learning Centre's commitment to student success.
"The ALC provides a welcoming environment that supports students throughout their academic journey, helping them become confident and independent learners," she said.
"The Lunch & Chat Club offers an important opportunity to support students who may be experiencing challenges such as financial hardship, mental health concerns, social isolation, or the ongoing balancing act of work and study commitments."
Each session provides a free lunch alongside opportunities for informal conversation, with students encouraged to connect with peers from different courses, year levels, and backgrounds.
The initiative also aims to strengthen the sense of community across the Rockhampton campus by creating opportunities for students to share experiences, practical advice, and encouragement.
The first ALC Lunch & Chat Club was held on Monday 7 September, and twice-weekly sessions will continue through Term 2 2026.
