Alumni Award recipients lead with purpose, creativity and culture

CQUniversity’s 2026 Alumni Award recipients have advanced access to justice, amplified First Nations voices through music and storytelling, cared for Country and revitalised language and culture. 

The annual recognition has acknowledged four individuals who embody the University’s values and whose work creates meaningful change in communities, industries and lives. The 2026 awards have also proudly celebrated First Nations voices from CQU’s alumni community, with three recipients identifying as First Nations. 

Announced on 4 March 2026, the recipients are: 

Outstanding Alumnus of the Year  

Jo Leveritt 

A human rights lawyer and social justice advocate, Ms Leveritt is recognised for her leadership in improving access to justice and driving systemic reform. 

A CQUniversity graduate with a Graduate Certificate in Family and Domestic Violence Practice, she founded the not-for-profit Wide Bay Advocacy and later Bundaberg Street Law, delivering free, holistic legal services to vulnerable communities.  

Ms Leveritt’s work has spanned domestic and family violence, homelessness and child safety, complemented by extensive community leadership, advocacy and public education that has created lasting social impact across regional Queensland. 

Alumnus of the Year – Industry Excellence  

Tristan Barton 

A proud Yorta Yorta man and Bachelor of Music graduate, Mr Barton’s career as a composer, producer and drummer has captivated national and international stages.  

Based in regional Queensland, he has built a globally recognised screen music practice, with compositions featured across film, television, public art and major global brands.  

A Queensland Music Award winner, Mr Barton is known for emotionally rich, cinematic storytelling and his commitment to authentic First Nations narratives. He also mentors emerging musicians through the CQ Conservatorium of Music, strengthening creative pathways for future artists.  

Alumnus of the Year – Social Impact  

Sheree Blackley  

A proud Kalkutungu woman from the Mount Isa region, Ms Blackley’s work has transformed cultural visibility, language revival and community connection across north-west Queensland.  

The Associate Degree of Building Design graduate and current Bachelor of Science and Environment student, founded Malkarri Culture and Connection to protect and celebrate Kalkutungu heritage. 

Her leadership has revived the near-extinct Kalkutungu language, established school and TAFE programs, strengthened care for Country through Indigenous Rangers and created lasting pathways for First Nations youth.  

Alumnus of the Year – Early Career 

Zalhi Hayden 

Ms Hayden is a proud Darumbal woman who’s work as an Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger has demonstrated a deep commitment to caring for Country. 

The Certificate III Conservation and Ecosystem Management graduate is CQU’s first Vocational Education and Training (VET) Alumni Award recipient, who has combined her studies with traditional knowledge to protect land, sea and cultural heritage across Central Queensland.  

Recognised with the 2025 Indigenous Women Rangers Network Young Ranger Award, Ms Hayden is also a respected cultural facilitator, language advocate and role model for young people, strengthening cultural identity and environmental stewardship for future generations. 

CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Nick Klomp said the 2026 Alumni Awards recipients reflected the University’s mission to create meaningful change. 

“These alumni have exemplified how CQUniversity graduates lead with purpose, creativity and compassion. The 2026 Alumni Award recipients have made a tangible difference in people’s lives, often in complex and challenging environments,” Professor Klomp said. 

“We are proud of our strong connection to regional communities and are particularly inspired to see this year’s recipients build world-class careers in regional Queensland. 

“Their achievements have demonstrated the difference education can make to communities, industries and future generations.”
