Former local family gives North Rocky students a leg up
Four new scholarships are giving North Rockhampton State High School graduates the chance to step confidently into their university journey at CQUniversity, thanks to the generosity of the Macoun Family and the CQUniCares program.
The CQUniCares Macoun Family Scholarships have been created to support local students who show determination, community spirit and academic potential, but who may face financial challenges in pursuing higher education.
CQUniversity Deputy Director of Philanthropy and Social Impact, Francois Gallais, said the initiative was a powerful example of how local giving can change lives.
“Right across our CQUniversity communities we see the need for support, to help people grow, connect and thrive,” Mr Gallais said.
“Scholarships like this don’t just fund education – they fuel confidence, opportunity and a sense of belonging for students who might otherwise hesitate to take that leap.”
The four scholarships, each valued at up to $5000 per year for three or four years, are available exclusively to graduates of North Rockhampton State High School who enrol in a CQUniversity course.
The funding can help cover the cost of study, accommodation, technology and living expenses, easing the financial pressure so students can focus on their future.
CQUniversity Associate Vice-President Kim Harrington said the scholarships reflect a shared belief in the potential of local young people.
“The Macoun Family’s support is a powerful message to North Rockhampton students that their ambitions matter, and their community believes in them,” Ms Harrington said.
“We’re proud to see this partnership creating real pathways for local graduates to study, grow and give back to Central Queensland.”
For engineering student and scholarship recipient Grace Price, the opportunity has already been life-changing.
“Currently in my engineering class I am one of a few who went to a state school, which not only brings me pride but also the confidence to inspire others,” Grace said.
“Being offered this scholarship brings me one step closer to turning that passion into a meaningful career.
“I hope to one day give back and support students the same way I’ve been supported.”
The scholarships form part of CQUniversity’s CQUniCares program, which connects generous donors with students whose lives are transformed through education.
In 2024 alone, more than 300 students across Australia received financial support through the program.
Mr Gallais said each scholarship represents more than a financial gift but an investment in confidence and community.
“When a student feels that someone has invested in their future, it changes how they see themselves and what they believe they can achieve,” he said.
