CQUniversity’s Chiropractic students had the chance to put their skills and knowledge to the test, helping athletes competing at the recent Professional Pickleball Association Tour in Tweed Heads.

Under the watchful eye of Australian Chiropractors Association sports chiropractor, Dr Nat Sharp, the students received valuable hands-on experience assisting the competing athletes.

“It’s such a great way for students to put their skills to the test in a real-world setting,” Dr Sharp said.

“Working at a sporting event means quick decisions, problem-solving on the fly, and handling a variety of athletes. It’s a whole different ball game compared to the classroom or clinic.

“These experiences help students build confidence, learn to adapt, and get a feel for what it’s really like to work in sport.”

The Chiropractic students gained experience by providing assessment and treatment to the athletes.

Dr Sharp said she understood the benefits of such an experience as she too undertook similar placements when she was a student.

“This kind of opportunity was something I had as a student, and it helped me massively as it gave me confidence, real-world experience, and even led to my first job after graduating. So, I’ve always been keen to pay that forward,” she said.

“The (CQU) students were awesome. They stepped in confidently, worked really well with the athletes, and brought fresh energy to the treatment team. They were able to apply what they’ve learned in a practical, fast-paced setting, and you could see their clinical decision-making improving as the event went on.

The students' confidence was boosted by the experience.

“The students were clear, engaging, and showed just how well-prepared our next generation of chiros really are. It’s always great to see students take ownership of their role and contribute meaningfully, in both treatment and education.

“These sorts of opportunities are exactly what students need to feel inspired, supported, and part of the profession. It helps bridge the gap between studying and working in the field and if we can keep creating these touchpoints, we’ll have more grads stepping out with confidence and a real passion for sports chiro.”
