Jessica’s nursing dream boosted by Connellan Airways Trust Scholarship

Jessica Mcdougall is pursuing her dream of becoming a remote nurse in the Cape York Peninsula, thanks to a CQUniCares Connellan Airways Trust Scholarship.
As a nursing student, Jessica Mcdougall’s goal is to leave a lasting impression on the Cape York community and the CQUniCares Connellan Airways Trust Scholarship is helping her do just that.
Jessica, who lives in Weipa and is studying a Bachelor of Nursing, was recently awarded a $5 000 scholarship from the Connellan Airways Trust.
Although she is currently working at Weipa Hospital as an administration officer, Jessica dreams of becoming a remote nurse or midwife within the Cape York Peninsula, and the scholarship is helping her follow that path.
“When I got the phone call notifying me of my success I was in such disbelief – It really cemented in my mind that I have chosen the right path,” she said.
“Along with the confidence booster, the scholarship has obviously relieved some of the financial stress for my small family. This has enabled me to put my two children into an extra day of care allowing me to focus on my studies.
“My husband works in the mine in Weipa. At times studying with two children and a shift working husband can be a challenge. My little family is sacrificing a lot to enable me to study and at times it can be emotionally draining. However, I am incredibly lucky to have an empowering group of family and friends that support me.”
Jessica was motivated to enrol at CQUniversity by her mother and sister who have also studied with the University.
“I knew that the delivery of learning was going to suit my remote location and the support that is offered to students at CQUni really amazes me,” she said.
“During the times I have felt overwhelmed I have always been lifted up by the teaching team, learning support or other students. CQUni has a wonderful sense of community.
“The reason I chose to study nursing leads to my long involvement in the healthcare industry. I want to make a difference to the health of individuals and families across the Cape and empower people to be proactive about healthcare. Great nurses can leave lasting impressions on individuals and communities. I want to become a nurse that leaves a lasting impression on my region.
“I would just like to say an enormous thank you to the Connellan Airways Trust for believing in this small-town country girl. I am so grateful and proud to be connected with your organisation.”
