CQUni Certificate III in Commercial Cookery student Ezra Magpantay has come a long way in her course since arriving from the Philippines last year.

The decision to leave her home in the Philippines last year to study Commercial Cookery at CQUniversity Australia, has become a recipe for success for Ezra Magpantay.

The 36-year-old is thriving in the Willby’s Training Restaurant kitchens at CQUni’s Rockhampton City Campus, as she discovers new ways of cooking.

“I am definitely enjoying the course,” she said.

“I get to cook and bake dishes I have never done before – like making lasagne with eggplant.”

Ezra’s move to Australia to study was motivated by her sister, who also lives in Rockhampton.

“I arrived in Australia in September last year – it’s my third time visiting Australia and every time I come here I am amazed by the environment and the people,” she said.

“I found the education system in Australia to be renowned. I have only been in Rockhampton for a month, but I found the city to be secure and friendly and there’s always plenty of great things to do and places to visit.

“I wasn’t confident (at first) that I would be able to cope with a fully-fledged program until my sister and brother-in-law offered me the support to pursue my dream to obtain a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery and a Diploma of Hospitality Management, which I hope to finish by early 2022.”

Ezra said when she finishes her studies, she plans to return to the Philippines to start her own restaurant.

“I feel I will have sufficient knowledge and skills to explore my abilities even more and it will enable me to open a restaurant in the Philippines, maybe even a restaurant chain,” she said.

“I could also be part of a large organisation, such as Radisson Blu Cebu or Shrangri-La’s Borcay Resort & Spa.”
