Mackay ballet dancer Dominic McCarthy already has a toe-hold in the world of entrepreneurship, with a little help from CQUniversity.

Through his Start Uni Now (SUN) studies with CQUni, Dominic came into contact with Business academic Jim Callan.

Mr Callan then connected him with ‘teenpreneur’ Scott Millar of BOP Industries, a Brisbane-based technology and education startup.

This introduction led to Dominic’s initial ‘live pitch’ to the Young Starters Competition launch night at River City Labs in Brisbane, and a nomination for the Gen (in) Challenge. Both initiatives offer cash prizes for the winning competitors.

“My Male Dancer Network idea has been very well received by Brisbane entrepreneurs and business mentors through both the Gen [in] Challenge and Young Starters Competition launch night,” Dominic says.

“I am looking forward to further developing the idea through both these Queensland entrepreneurship competitions.”

He also works in two casual jobs (retail and hospitality) and operates his own cleaning business to help pay for his dance lessons.

Later this year he will decide whether to pursue a Fine Arts degree majoring in dance with Queensland University of Technology, or to continue his studies with CQUniversity.

In the meantime, he really enjoys the SUN program and the great support he gets from the SUN outreach team and lecturers.

“SUN is a great way to experience university-level studies at an early age,” Dominic says.
