Gladstone women thrive thanks to QAL scholarships

The 2019 CQUniCares Queensland Alumina scholarships are now open to local students looking to start their studies through CQUniversity Australia.

This partnership between Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) and CQUni provides $5000 scholarships to support local students to study at CQUni Gladstone.

In 2018, scholarships were awarded to Heidi McCormick and Abi Meehan.

Heidi is currently completing her Bachelor of Accounting at CQUni. She is a mother of two young boys and has lived locally for 10 years.

“The scholarship assists with so many expenses that occur when being a studying mother," Heidi says.

"There are textbooks, university fees and childcare just to name a few. I feel very privileged to be chosen and to know that all of my hard work so far at University has led towards such an unexpected achievement.”

Abi Meehan was also an awarded a 2018 CQUniCares Queensland Alumina scholarship. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Diploma of Professional Practice (Co-op Engineering) at CQUni Gladstone.

“Engineering has always been my desired career path,"  Abi says.

"I want to be an engineer who challenges themselves for the improvement of society and the environment and to help make this world we live in more productive. This scholarship provides significance assistance toward me achieving this goal.”

QAL has partnered with CQUni for more than 20 years to deliver scholarships in the region.

CQUniversity's Deputy Director, Development and Alumni Relations, Francois Gallais says that support through the Scholarships and Academic Prize program provides students with encouragement, support and recognition of their hard work.

"The ripple effect of QAL’s support begins with the recipients and extends to their families and communities, now and in the future," Mr Gallais says.
