Music Theatre graduate thrives on West End, releases debut EP

Published:06 November 2017

CQUni Alumnus Paul Tabone has released his debut Christmas EP 'Written In the Stars - A Holiday Songbook' with his leading lady in 'Phantom of the Opera', Lara Martins.

CQUniversity Music Theatre graduate Paul Tabone has reached another milestone in his glittering career with release of his debut EP, recorded with his Phantom of the Opera co-star.

The West End of London where Paul is currently performing in Phantom must seem a long way from the sugarcane farm that he grew up on, in North Queensland.

Since graduating from CQUniversity's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Mackay, in 2009, Paul has been constantly employed in both opera and musical theatre productions.

When Paul was just 28 years of age, he was chosen to perform at the home of Luciano Pavarotti to a ‘Sold Out’ arena in Verona and he also shared the stage with operatic icons Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo.

He made his debut at the National Opera of Bucharest (Romania), Teatro Carlo Felice (Italy), Teatro Del Giglio (Italy) and performed on Broadway (New York).

In 2015, he made his German debut in the return season of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies in Hamburg’s Operettenhaus.

Paul played the role of Squelch in both the Australian and German productions of Love Never Dies. After successful Sydney and Melbourne seasons, the $9.8 million production was filmed by Universal Pictures International and is currently screening in cinemas and available on DVD & Blu-Ray in over 75 countries.

Currently, this Australian lyric tenor resides in London’s West End where he performs the lead role of Piangi in the world’s longest-running and most successful musical theatre production, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.

This Christmas you can listen to Paul's debut Christmas EP called Written In The Stars – A Holiday Songbook. Paul’s leading lady in Phantom, good friend and stunning soprano Lara Martins, co-stars with him on this album.

“I have been living and performing in Europe for the last six years,"  Paul says.

"I have studied and worked tirelessly in opera and music theatre during this time and I have loved every second of it.

"When I was a child my ‘Nanna’ took me to a local picture theatre to see the movie, The Phantom of the Opera and it was then and there that I decided it was my life’s ambition to perform in this musical on the West End.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to return to my Ingham hometown near Townsville for over two years

"I have wanted to ‘give back’ to my and my family’s community. Because I can’t be home for Christmas this year I will be making available to the folks of Ingham and even to my friends and fans further afield my Christmas EP."
