Baden all revved-up about new career as an auto-mechanic

Baden Todd now has an apprenticeship with Tropical Auto Group Rockhampton after enrolling in CQUniversity's pre-apprenticeship program.

CQUniversity has helped Baden Todd put the pedal to the metal on his future, with his efforts in the University’s pre-apprenticeship program leading to a full apprenticeship with the Tropical Auto Group (TAG) in Rockhampton.

The 20-year-old has been studying a Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology as part of the pre-apprenticeship program at CQUniversity’s Rockhampton City Campus and is now enrolled in a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical for his apprenticeship.

As part of the training Baden undertook work placement at TAG and quickly hit his stride.

“The pre-apprenticeship program gave me the opportunity to participate in work experience while attaining competencies in various automotive mechanic courses,” Baden said.

“By demonstrating my capabilities and talents to TAG during the four weeks of work experience, it led to me being offered a full time apprenticeship.”

The flexibility of his apprenticeship with TAG and that of CQUniversity’s courses meant Baden could continue his Certificate II training.

“TAG has been great letting me continue my enrolment in the pre-apprenticeship course, allowing me to spend one day a week at CQUni finishing off the practical and book work,” he said.

“The training at CQUni is hands on and covers a variety of relevant skills to the automotive industry.

“Becoming an automotive mechanic is a means to an end because I enjoy working on and playing around with high performance vehicles and old school four-wheel-drives.

“If someone was really set on becoming an automotive mechanic participating in a CQUni course gives you skills and qualifications that employers value and is the best way to get your foot in the door.”
