Multi-instrumentalist Matthew Barker performs his original music as The Bucketseats

Matthew Barker got a kickstart from his time at CQUniversity's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Mackay and he's had plenty of chances to hone his craft over the decade since.

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Music, the multi-instrumentalist has been recording his own music and performing along the east coast of Australia with original bands including the Ryan Giles Band, punk band Army of Champions and hard rock blues bands Cleveland Blues and Transvaal Diamond Syndicate.

Matthew is currently juggling his musical commitments with study at CQUniversity Bundaberg towards a Bachelor of Learning Management (Primary Education) degree, as well as teaching instrumental music part-time in a number of schools. If that wasn't enough, his partner Natalie is due to have a baby in June.

At the forthcoming Autumn Sounds Festival on Easter Sunday in Bundaberg, where he's performing as The Bucketseats, he's likely to cross paths with other CQ Conservatorium alumni, including Josh Appleby (now in Cheapfake). It wasn't until 2011 that Matthew decided to create and promote his own original works. The Bucketseats was designed as an output for creating music with no restrictions regarding style, genre, or
instrumentation. To begin with, this project was recorded at home, a learning tool for creating, arranging, recording and sharing original music.

The support received has been overwhelming. The Bucketseats have released a variety of EPs and a number of music videos and have toured throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.

The Bucketseats debut EP The Direction of this Path, was released in June 2012, and was the first cache of original music recorded by the 'almost-one-man-band'. Next was the track Beautiful which was released only online as a single with all profits for the first four months going to the Umoja Orphanage in Kenya. Forever Lost At Sea - Acoustic Session was to follow - a solo live performance 5 track EP with a laid-back, acoustic folk vibe.

Searching For The Light was the third release from The Bucketseats in October 2013. It was followed by a short run of performance dates. The 5 track EP recorded at Sound Room Studios on the Sunshine Coast features guest vocals and songs co-written by Carl Wockner.

Meantime, 2014 is shaping up to be another amazing year with the release of the fourth independent release Frozen In Time. Recorded at RND Records Brisbane with the guidance of Ric Parker, this 5 track EP redefines The Bucketseats' use of instrumentation, arrangements and stylistic ideas. Performing as The Bucketseats, Matthew has supported a number of Australian artists including Ash Grunwald, Sietta, James Blundell, Justin Standley, Mental As Anything, The Timbers and Bob Evans.

At the 2011 Byron Bay Blues Festival he shared the bill with Bob Dylan and BB King. He's also featured at The Agnes Blues and Roots and Mud Sweat and Tears (Bundaberg Flood Recovery).

The Bucketseats have been included in a number of amazing musical projects including QUT's Independent Music Project Brisbane and the Brisbane Balcony Tv Youtube Sessions, with the track An Early Grave.
