Student-led Rockhampton Health Clinic back into action

Published:11 August 2020

CQUniversity Health Clinic students restarted outreach services recently at Coffey Testing's Stress Down Day.

As the COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease, the CQUniversity Rockhampton Health Clinic has started outreach services again, this time assisting national business Coffey Testing at the Rockhampton branch during their ‘Stress Down Day’.

A CQUniversity Physiotherapy team, including Clinical Supervisor Kasey Bonato and third and fourth-year Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) students Thomas Laycock, Munyaradzi Muchinguri, Tai Wakelin-Gray and Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) students Susan Clarke and Brooke Roberts, attended Coffey Testing in Rockhampton to provide massages and an educational session on the importance of mental health to their employees, especially during the COVID pandemic.

“It was great to be able to get out into the community and provide such a valuable service to the local public,” Ms Clarke said.

“It also provided students a great learning opportunity.”

“As COVID restrictions have limited our abilities for outreach services for most of the year, it was great to see the students working with an interdisciplinary approach for a common cause,” Ms Bonato said.

Ms Bonato expects that as restrictions with sport and within the community ease that physiotherapists will be in high demand with exercise and sporting related injuries over the coming months.

“It is important to recognise that people have not been able to participate in their regular day-to-day activities over the past few months and that their mental health could be suffering,” Ms Bonato explained.

“It was important for people to recognise this and know where to find help if needed, which the OT students did a great job of.”

The physiotherapy service and occupational therapy service is open for appointments at the

CQUniversity Rockhampton Health Clinic on the North Rockhampton campus.

Appointments are available Monday to Friday to assist with back and neck pain, sporting injuries, as well as post-operative rehabilitation and exercise programs.

Appointments are just $30 for a thorough physiotherapy assessment and treatment.
