Construction Management graduate Helen Motti reflected on persistence, commitment and hard work when she addressed this week's CQUni Townsville graduation ceremony.

Among the audience listening to her 'graduate response address' was her Aunt Trina Motti, who completed an Accounting degree.

Helen, who was also honoured with the Associate Vice-Chancellor Medal, said the ceremony was about much more than getting a piece of paper.

"It’s the key to unlock new opportunities for our careers and a reminder of how far we have come," Helen said.

"It is a testimony of our persistence, commitment and hard work, which has allowed us to graduate from our respective courses today.

"It’s also symbolic of the journey we have undertaken to arrive at this point in our lives.

"For some of us, we might have chosen this career path from the very beginning. For others, like myself, you may have simply fallen into it. I was enrolled to study Physiotherapy when l finished Year 12. Today, I graduated with a Construction Management degree.

"One afternoon, I left home to interview for a receptionist position with construction company, Laing O’Rourke, and I returned home with a cadetship offer. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I remember the first thing I told Dad when I arrived home; 'guess what, I’m going to be a builder'.

A total of 24 graduates crossed the stage representing fields as diverse as health, business, education, accounting, environmental management, law, and asset and maintenance management.

The first female Mayor of the City of Townsville, Cr Jenny Hill was the guest speaker for the event at Rydges South Bank.
