Rockhampton Chinese Association hosts a barbecue lunch for visiting Yancheng Uni students.

Rockhampton’s local Chinese families have welcomed 18 students visiting from Yancheng University with a barbecue lunch on Sunday.

The Yancheng University students are on a three-month visit to CQUniversity Rockhampton North campus, where they are learning English and attending lectures for subjects such as Business and Communications.

CQUni Associate Vice-Chancellor (Rockhampton Region), Kim Harrington says a recent campus welcome ceremony for the visitors was webcast to almost 17,000 people in China.

Ms Harrington said there were plans for a second cohort from Yancheng University to visit CQUniversity in July, “with the hope to develop and establish a long-term partnership with Yancheng University”.

“CQUni Rockhampton North campus was selected in preference to one of our metro campus locations because students and their families were looking for a traditional university campus experience, plus China is now recognising that the opportunity for English proficiency is increased in regional cities where they are more exposed to English.”

Ms Harrington says the Rockhampton Chinese Association and Temple Society welcomed the current Yancheng University visitors with the barbecue event.

“The local Chinese Association has been extremely responsive and welcoming of this opportunity for us to work together.”

While in Rockhampton, the visiting students will visit Dreamtime Cultural Centre, Great Keppel Island and Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary.
