Last year's entries ranged from a mixed media assemblage commenting on a failed council amalgamation to a very personal family portrait and a visualisation of a 30 million-year-old fossil fruit.

Now the popular CQU Creates competition is open again for entries in 2017.

The competition is open to artists from across Australia who have ties to the University, as a past or present staff member or student of either CQUniversity or CQ TAFE.

CQUniversity Art Collection Manager Sue Smith says artists are encouraged to start work now on their entries as they have only 8-10 weeks to complete their work. Artworks and the entry form must be delivered between Friday – Saturday, 2-3 June.

"There are more prizes this year. The CQU Anniversary Award valued at $500 and CQU Creates 2017 Indigenous Art Award valued at $1000 are new this year," Ms Smith says.

"The exhibition offers opportunities for sales and long-term exposure. In addition to the prizes, last year a private buyer bought a work and the University each year usually also purchases a number of works for the CQU Art Collection, which go on display in our campuses across Australia.

"The touring exhibition has an opening at each venue, which are fun events much enjoyed by staff, students and visitors. The touring exhibition coincides with Uni Open Days at Mackay and Gladstone, so we expect a large roll-up of local viewers at those venues."

Artists can choose one of these themes:

Address a theme of relevance to you and your locality or community, or

Celebrate CQUniversity by alluding to one or more of these milestones:

1967 (First intake of students to the then ‘Queensland Institute of Technology (Capricornia)’, Rockhampton ‒ 50 years)

1987 (Establishment of Mackay Campus ‒ 30 years)

1992 (Institution achieves full university status ‒ 25 years)

1997 (Establishment of Melbourne Campus ‒ 20 years)

As part of the exhibition the following prizes will be awarded:

CQU CREATES 2017 ART AWARD – $1000 cash, non-acquisitive award

CQU CREATES 2017 INDIGENOUS ART AWARD – $1000 cash, non-acquisitive award
