CQUni Council members Patrice Brown and Ben Brown are not related but they are both heading to the State finals of the 2017 Australian Leadership Excellence Awards (ALEAs).

Both are also alumni of CQUni.

They were among a range of CQUni students and staff nominated as regional finalists throughout Queensland.

Patrice Brown won the Owner/Entrepreneur Leader of the Year category of the North Queensland regional finals.

Ben Brown won the Student Leader of the Year category of the Capricorn regional finals.

In addition, CQUni professional staff member Dr Leone Hinton won the Leader/Manager category of the Capricorn regional finals and academic staff member Maree Franettovich took out a CQ Regional Community Leader of the Year award and a spot at the State finals.

Regional award winners will feature at the State finals in Brisbane on 19 September, hoping to reach the National finals in Sydney on 5 October.

The ALEAs recognise outstanding leadership and management. The awards showcase those who have made significant impacts and contributions to their community and organisations. For the regional awards, entrants lodged a submission and references and were interviewed by a judging panel.

Other regional finalists included alumnus David Donohue and current students Jackson Hughes, Luke Sondergeld, Taryn Gollshewsky, Megan Brunker and Erin Daly.

As well as being on the CQUni Council, Ben Brown is a CQUni Engineering graduate who is on the Student Representative Council as a current Master of Management student.

He's currently working full-time as a Graduate Civil Engineer with RMA Engineers in Bundaberg, working on a range of projects including the design of subdivisions and road network design/planning.

Ben is also on the Board of Directors in an intern role for Regional Housing Limited, which deals with housing for people who are homeless, as well as community/public housing.

Patrice Brown, a CQUni Alumnus who holds qualifications in Chemistry, Engineering and Business, is a company director and founder at CQG Consulting.

The Rockhampton-based businesswoman and entrepreneur has recently been appointed to the Queensland Premier's Business Advisory Council.

Her ALEAs recognition also comes on the back of her being awarded the 2016 Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year Award in the Entrepreneur Category and the Forty Callis Award for contribution to growth in the Gladstone region.

Dr Leone Hinton is currently the Director of Strategic Planning and Risk Management, based at CQUniversity Rockhampton North.

She has had a range of roles at CQUni across the fields of project management, multimedia design, and faculty management.

"The award is shared between myself, my family and the people who serve both the university and the community," Dr Hinton says.
