The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans registered their 15th straight win in a home opener on Thursday night, holding off a determined Illawarra Hawks outfit 79-74 at the Cairns Convention Centre.

Cameron Gliddon led a balanced scoring attack for the hosts with his 19 points at 50 per cent.

Meantime, strong play at both ends by Alex Loughton (12 points, 5 rebounds) and Mark Worthington (12 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals) kept the Snakes in front in the game’s late stages.

Kirk Penney (12 points) scored 6 points in 3 minutes to keep the Hawks competitive into the fourth, and Jarrad Weeks impressed with his 12 points at 100 per cent.

CQUni student member of the Taipans, Shaun Bruce calmly knocked down a three for a 74-71 lead with two minutes left and the Taipans never looked back.

CQUni Cairns Taipans Cairns have now shifted their attention to Saturday’s clash with the Kings in Sydney.
