The Master of Public Health is the pinnacle level of study in the CQUniversity suite of postgraduate public health courses. It is an innovative course that will introduce you to the social-ecological model of health. This model which is strongly aligned with contemporary trends and challenges in public health provides the basis of innovative interventions for social change. Unlike other Public Health courses that traditionally focus on the medical model of health, the Master of Public Health at CQUniversity will also incorporate a social perspective of public health skills, knowledge and practice. In this innovative course, the origins and evolution of public health and the underlying principles of community-based and community-led public health will be explored. The social-ecological model of health forms the basis of the Master of Public Health and you will study complex adaptive systems thinking and how this influences the way we think about public health.

You will have the opportunity to apply these concepts in practical ways in both strengths-based and disease prevention approaches. This will ensure that you apply your learning to real-world situations.

You will also have the flexibility of choosing from a list of electives or to undertake the project stream once you have completed the core structure. This project can be practice or research-based allowing you to develop specific skills and knowledge in your area of interest.

COURSE STRUCTURE

You are required to complete sixteen (16) units, this includes ten (10) core units and a choice of electives or of undertaking the project stream. The core units cover topics such as understanding public health, a systems thinking approach to public health, social epidemiology, public health action and evaluation, global public health, health research, cultural immersion and three cross-cultural communities units. The elective units can be taken in either a project stream or a liberal studies stream.

Students with relevant health qualifications and experience may be eligible for advanced standing and a shorter course duration.

Entry Requirement:

A 3 year Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in any discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.

International students or domestic students born outside of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA must meet English Language Proficiency requirements. Minimum scores required are:

• IELTS (Academic) score of at least 6.0 (with no band score less than 5.5), or

• TOEFL overall score of 75 with no score less than 17, or

• Pearson Test of English Academic overall score of 54 with no score less than 46, or

• An Occupational English Test with Grades A or B only in each of the four components; or

• Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - Score of 180 or above.

English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study, and must appear on a single result certificate.

Advanced Standing:

The following applicants may be eligible for a shorter course duration:

· Applicants with a recognised Bachelor degree in a related discipline and 2 years postgraduate relevant work experience.

· Applicants with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Public Health.

· Applicants with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a related discipline and 2 years postgraduate relevant work experience.

Students who have completed a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from another institution would be eligible for credit for up to four units from the core or elective/specialisation units on entry into the Master of Public Health.

Students who have completed a Graduate Certificate in another health related discipline would be eligible for credit for up to four units from the electives/specialisation units on entry into the Master of Public Health.

Students who have complete a Graduate Diploma in another health related discipline would be eligible for credit for up to six units from the electives/specialisation units on entry to the Master of Public Health.

The Master of Public Health prepares graduates for work in community-based and community-led health services and organisations including international agencies. You can also work on projects for government and non-government organisations relating to a number of health fields including health promotion and health administration.

There is no provision for professional accreditation in public health in Australia. However, once you have graduated, you may be eligible for registration as a Health Promotion Practitioner through the Australian Health Promotion Association, and to apply for membership of the Public Health Association of Australia.

FEE-HELP is the loan scheme provided the Australian Government to help eligible students pay their tuition fees through a loan.

Eligible students can use a FEE-HELP loan to pay for all or some of their tuition fees. If you elect to use a FEE-HELP loan, this means that you will defer payment of your tuition fees and repay your FEE-HELP loan when your income is above the compulsory repayment threshold (the 2018-2019 income year threshold is $51,957 or above).
