The overarching goal of the project is to scale the placement of nature-based solutions to extend the “living seawall” habitat creation of mangrove and oyster habitat and expand to seagrass habitat in the Port of Gladstone and eventually scale up to other GPC Port locations. Specifically, the research aim will be to assess the contribution of these living seawall habitats to four key ecosystem services: Blue Carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, fish habitat and bird foraging, and develop methods for nature-based accounting of the services provided. Assessments will be on new and existing areas of created habitat to provide a space for time substitution comparison on the development of ecosystem service provision.
Essential: Honours or Master's in Marine Ecology; Intertidal fieldwork experience; Strong research communication skills.
Optional: Benthic taxonomy skills; GIS; Drone Pilot; Coxswains
The project aligns to CMERC’s mission of actively supporting the stakeholder-led implementation of ‘best practice’ coastal management through cooperative, practical and educational partnerships.
