Wabu

First Nations Biodiversity and Application.

Wabu: scrub – thick impenetrable vegetation, interlaced with vines and undergrowth.

Wabu” means scrub — a place of thick, living Country, where plants, animals, and people are deeply interconnected. The Wabu Cluster brings together First Nations knowledge holders, researchers, and communities to protect and revitalise the rich biodiversity of Australia’s native landscapes.

Our vision is to build strong, ethical, and meaningful partnerships grounded in respect and guided by First Nations knowledge systems, while advancing scientific understanding and real-world applications. We work at the intersection of culture, science, and Country — exploring how native resources and ecosystems can support better health, sustainable industries, and environmental care.

The cluster focuses on:

  • Documenting and respecting Traditional Knowledge and cultural practices
  • Extensively studying the chemistry and medicinal properties of native resources, guided by First Nations knowledge systems
  • Developing sustainable products and health applications from native biodiversity
  • Creating opportunities for community-led research, training, and enterprise, providing a platform for aspiring First Nations small businesses seeking commercial pathways for their products and knowledge
  • Protecting and revitalising native species and landscapes

Through projects like the Gumbi Gumbi program, Wabu exemplifies how cultural leadership, and science can work hand in hand. Our goal is to ensure First Nations voices lead the way whereby strengthening Country, culture, and community for generations to come.
