Jumbal
First Nations Self-Determination in and Through Education
Our Vision: Moving beyond educational equity to support self-determination for First Nations learners and communities.
Our Aim: To lead transformative education-based research that challenges the status quo to drive meaningful outcomes for First Nations learners and communities.
Jumbal is an education-focused research cluster, with a vision of moving beyond educational equity to support true self-determination and sovereignty for First Nations learners and communities. Our work is dedicated to transforming education systems across the lifespan, with a particular focus on pathways to and through tertiary education.
Grounded in culture, courage, partnerships, relationality, and accountability, Jumbal facilitates Mob-led, strength-based research shaped by Indigenous voices at every stage. We deliver impact through co-design, evaluation, and knowledge translation, with a strong focus on self-determination, understanding learner needs, and honouring lived experiences and aspirations to ensure meaningful outcomes for First Nation learners and communities.
Jumbal, meaning “showing something by holding it up”, exemplifies its name by holding up Our Ways of learning to demonstrate what is possible when education is grounded in Indigenous knowledge and leadership. Together, we aim to shape futures where First Nations learners thrive, not only within existing systems but lead the way in reimagining and transforming what lies beyond.
