Integrated Genetic Health Care (IGHC)

About the Research Project

With the advancement of genetic research and genomic healthcare, there is a growing need to describe how research supports health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This project applies and evaluates an integrated genetic health care model collaboratively designed with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled primary health sector. It has been deployed in Queensland and Western Australia; utilising workforce, health promotion and coordinated care strategies to improve access to quality genetic health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Establishing a national network of clinical geneticists to explore nation-wide adaptation and uptake.

Developed by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; in partnership with experts from the community, universities, community-controlled health service, and the public hospital and health service sector; Integrated Genetic HealthCare (IGHC) is a 3-year project that aims to improve coordinated care between primary and specialist (Genetic Health) services.  This project focuses on development, deployment, and evaluation of solutions across three domains:

  1. Health Promotion,
  2. Integrated Healthcare and
  3. Workforce Development.

Impact
