Indigenous Language Loss Among Papua New Guinea’s Young People: Scope and Ramifications

About the Research Project
The world’s languages cease to be spoken at an increasing pace, and this is especially true of languages of Australia’s nearest neighbour and strategic partner, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Indigenous language is a principal marker of identity and repository of biocultural knowledge.
This project aims to evaluating the state of attrition of indigenous languages amongst PNG youth, focusing on the following:
- What is the current state of Indigenous language knowledge among youth in PNG?
- What are the wellbeing and developmental ramifications of language loss in PNG?
- How effective are language strengthening and revitalization programs among youth in PNG?
