Synopsis
Artificial intelligence is changing how people teach and learn, from tools like ChatGPT that can write and explain code to systems that personalise learning and give instant feedback. This project explores how AI, and generative AI in particular, can be used in education in ways that genuinely improve learning rather than encouraging shortcuts, and how to design tools and guardrails that keep students actively thinking. The scope is broad across STEM and computing education and can be shaped toward building AI-assisted learning tools, evaluating them in real classrooms, or studying how teaching and assessment should change now that large language models are widely available. Current work includes a review of generative AI in programming education, which offers a ready starting point and example.

Possible directions include: designing and testing AI-assisted learning tools for programming and STEM courses; measuring effects on student engagement, understanding and results using mixed methods; rethinking assessment and academic integrity in the age of large language models; strategies to reduce over-reliance and encourage deeper learning; and personalised or adaptive learning powered by AI. Recent work on generative AI in programming education provides an example and foundation.
