Optimising Lateral Support in Ballasted Railway Tracks Using a Coupled FEM–DEM Model

Thesis Abstract

This research aims to optimise lateral support in ballasted railway tracks using a coupled FEM–DEM modelling framework. Railway track buckling, driven by insufficient lateral resistance, poses major safety and maintenance challenges. Current methods lack a comprehensive numerical model that captures the combined lateral, longitudinal, and vertical forces acting on tracks. This study develops and validates a detailed FEM–DEM model to investigate key geometric and mechanical parameters and evaluate lateral support systems. Through parametric simulations and optimisation, the research will provide engineers with reliable tools to design safer, more efficient, and cost-effective railway track structures, strengthening infrastructure resilience.
