Equivalence in the student experience: A study of student perceptions in a Digital Media courseThesis Abstract
Over the past two decades, there has been substantial, continued growth in the number of enrolments in online courses in the higher education sector making it increasingly important to understand how equivalent learning experiences can be achieved for all students, regardless of their chosen study mode. Additionally, in 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced universities worldwide to quickly transition from traditional face-to-face classes to online classes as part of social distancing measures designed to slow the spread of the disease. These restrictions and growth in online learning have compelled academics and universities to consider how online delivery impacts student experience and how to ensure students receive an equivalent learning experience despite any imposed restrictions.
The proposed research project will employ qualitative research methods, specifically in-depth, semi-structured interviews, to evaluate student perceptions of equivalence and identify effective strategies that higher education institutions can adopt to ensure all students have access to equivalent learning experiences. The responses will be coded and analysed using a constructivist grounded theory methodology to formulate a theory based on key findings in the data. Through an extensive analysis, a theory will be developed to establish a comprehensive definition of educational equivalence that takes into account both institutional measures and student perceptions. This theory will explain the interrelated concepts and relationships that contribute to the development of student perceptions regarding equivalent learning experiences.
The results of this research will be highly beneficial for higher education institutions, academics, and stakeholders in the tertiary sector. It will develop a framework based on the emerging theory that will allow higher education institutions to adopt effective strategies to ensure that their students receive a high-quality education, irrespective of their chosen study mode.
Why My Research is Important/Impacts
This research project will
- contribute to the debates about the meaning of equivalence in a higher education setting,
- identify factors of equivalence that are important from the perspectives of students,
- translate findings to practical implications for academics, and
- enhance and support curriculum and pedagogy design and implementation in higher education.
