How Accredited Exercise Physiologists are Integrated into Multidisciplinary Mental Health Care for People Residing in Rural and Remote Australia

Thesis Abstract

The mental and physical health of those residing in Australian rural and remote communities is poorer compared with those in major cities and higher rates of chronic health conditions often co-exist with mental health conditions leading to premature mortality. Regular physical activity can reduce disease burden, including that associated with mental illness. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-trained health professionals skilled in providing evidence-based physical activity.

Why My Research is Important/Impacts

The proposed research will build a model by which AEPs can be integrated into multidisciplinary mental health care for people residing in rural and remote Australia. It will be guided by current clinical practice, expert opinion of mental health professionals, mental health consumers, AEPs and AEP governing body Exercise and Sports Science Australia. This research will provide recommendations on how AEPs can be best integrated into a rural and remote multidisciplinary mental health team. The research may support improvements in service delivery for people with mental health conditions in rural and remote Australia. Â
