Fostering Bonds – Unveiling the Social Experiences of Foster Carers’ and Intellectually Disabled ChildrenThesis Abstract
An exploration into the lived experience of foster carers' and their socialisation with their intellectually impaired foster child. A hermeneutic phenomenology research.
Why My Research is Important/Impacts
Children who live with an intellectual disability are overrepresented in the child welfare system both internationally and nationally. These vulnerable children are more likely to experience placement breakdown, lengthier stays in OOHC and are at an increased risk of placement in group homes or specialised care settings. My research has an education focus as I intend to undertake training and education of existing and future foster carers. The project has an interdisciplinary approach primarily focusing on psycho-social well-being and education/training with an aim to produce more effective ways to identify and train suitable foster carers, in addition to educating social workers on how to identify foster families in need of intervention. I intend to engage with the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), a key stakeholder, where together we will aim to improve the well-being of foster children and the functioning of the family.
