The Retrospective Teacher-Parent Experience: A Grounded Theory Study on the Processes, Relationship and Influence that Private Music Teachers Experienced when Educating Their Own Children.Thesis Abstract
By interviewing local music teachers and their adult children, I hope to gain insight into how to teach music to one's own child/children. This research will give insight into the struggles of the different roles some working parents face when they try to be both teacher and parent. Through this research, I hope to possibly identify key successes and issues with teaching one’s own children, as well as identifying strategies that help overcome these issues.
Why My Research is Important/Impacts
Most papers I have read address the impact of parents who support their children learning music, not specifically the impact of music teachers educating their own children's music. There are many studies on the ‘parent/coach’ and ‘child/athlete’ relationship in sport, but not as much research has been done in the musical realm.
