Examining the Accessibility to Mental Health Support Among Adult Chinese International Students Over the Age of 18 in Australia: A Mixed Methods StudyThesis Abstract
This study explores mental health challenges and access barriers for Chinese international students in Australia, noting a critical need for better support. Significant numbers face anxiety and depression, yet few seek professional help due to cultural and language differences, systemic obstacles and stigma. Utilising a mixed-methods design, this research aims to investigate these issues’ impact on students’ lives and academic performance and how stigma affects service access.
Why My Research is Important/Impacts
This research aims to improve understanding of mental health challenges faced by adult Chinese international students, informing support enhancements for their well-being. Findings will guide policymakers, health providers, and educational institutions in creating effective, culturally tailored mental health services, boosting Chinese students’ well-being and academic success. This will enhance the attractiveness of Australian higher education. The project seeks to understand Chinese students’ mental health needs, promoting inclusive environments and addressing academic literature gaps on institutional barriers. Culturally appropriate support services could improve student retention, success rates, and Australian higher education’s reputation, potentially increasing sector revenue.
