Japanese university students receive warm Aussie welcome at CQU's Cairns campus

27 February 2023

Fourteen Japanese tertiary students have been treated to an authentic Australian experience as part of an international study tour to CQUniversity’s Cairns campus recently.

The visit by the students from the Miyagi University of Education, is part of a long-standing partnership going back to 1997.

Prior to COVID-19, Miyagi sent annual study tour groups to Rockhampton, but this was the first study tour post-COVID and the first tour to the Cairns campus.

The students are in their second or third year of education undergraduate degrees from various specialisms. They were accompanied by Professor Tomonori Ichinose.

During the one-and-a-half-week tour the students stayed with local families to experience Australian culture and lifestyle.

They undertook English language classes, focusing on developing confidence and proficiency in speaking, covering topics such as Australian culture, history, Australian animals, the Great Barrier Reef and Japanese and Australian education systems.

Other activities included attending a CQUniversity Cairns Taipans basketball game, visiting local schools and an excursion to the Green Island Living Classroom.
