Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a passion for learning' who want to solve problems in their industry or community' or would like to advance their career' are being encouraged to consider a future in research with the CQUniversity Research Stipend Scholarship (Australian Indigenous).

Administered by CQUniversity's First Nations Research Higher Degree Academy' the $35'000 per year (indexed) scholarship will support impactful First Nations-led research by a Masters of Research or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate.

CQUniversity PhD student Samantha Cooms was a recipient of the scholarship in 2017' who explained the scholarship made it possible for her to start and continue her thesis 'Decolonising Disability: Quandamooka Weaving.'

"I am passionate about my research in exploring the lived experiences of the Quandamooka community in regards to disability.

"But as a mother trying to juggle a family' a PhD and work' it can be challenging'" she said.

"The scholarship took some pressure off the finances allowing more time to focus on my research."

The Quandamooka and Noonukul woman urged other First Nations students to seriously consider undertaking research with CQUniversity.

"The support I have received at CQUni has been second to none' not only financially' but the First Nations Research Higher Degree Academy has provided opportunities to work with other students' lecturers and academics.

"I have leant that you don't need to go through this journey alone. The help is there if you take it."

CQUniversity Deputy Vice-President Indigenous Engagement and BHP Chair in Indigenous Engagement' Professor Adrian Miller said he was proud to see First Nations students such as Samantha succeeding in research.

"The enrolment rates of Indigenous RHD candidates in this country are well under the population parity rate'" Professor Miller explained.

"Here at the First Nations Research Higher Degree Academy' we are committed to addressing that parity."
