Australian expertise helps shape the future of livestock research in the US

More than 30 graduate students and early career researchers from across the United States and Canada have gained cutting-edge livestock technology skills through a new international training program co-led by CQUniversity researchers.

Held at Oklahoma State University in August, the inaugural Cows&Code Intensive School in Sensors and Data Analytics for Livestock Researchers combined hands-on fieldwork with data science training, giving participants practical experience using technology that is transforming modern livestock production.

CQUniversity livestock technology researchers Professor Mark Trotter, Dr Anita Chang and Dr Thomas Williams joined academics from Oklahoma State University, South Dakota State University and the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) to deliver the week-long program.

Participants built GPS tracking collars and accelerometer ear tags, visited Oklahoma State University's Bluestem Research Range to see virtual fencing and livestock sensors in action, and learned how advanced analytics can be used to better understand animal behaviour and management.

CQUniversity Professor Mark Trotter said the intensive school reflected growing demand for researchers who can work across both animal science and digital technology.

"Livestock research is becoming increasingly sensor-driven, and Cows&Code gives researchers the practical skills and confidence to work with these technologies from the paddock through to the data analysis," Prof Trotter said.

"One of the greatest strengths of the program is the collaboration. We've brought together expertise from Australia and the United States, allowing participants to learn from researchers tackling similar challenges in very different production systems."

Throughout the week, attendees progressed from deploying sensors in the field to analysing the information they generate, exploring topics such as machine learning, spatial analysis and the use of time-series data to understand livestock behaviour.

Specialised workshops also introduced emerging research tools including ShinyR, animal social network analysis, and advanced data management techniques.

Oklahoma State University Professor Ryan Reuter said the partnership had created a unique learning opportunity to build capability in a rapidly advancing field.

"No single institution has all the expertise needed in this area," Prof Reuter said.

"Bringing together researchers from Oklahoma State University, CQUniversity, South Dakota State University and USDA has created an intensive learning experience that combines world-class animal science with cutting-edge data analytics.

"This collaboration is helping develop the next generation of researchers and strengthening capability across universities, research organisations and the livestock industry in North America."

Prof Trotter said one of the program's most valuable outcomes extended beyond technical skills.

"Participants are leaving with new capabilities, professional networks and opportunities for future collaboration," Prof Trotter said.

"Those connections often become the foundation for future research projects and innovations."

University of Tennessee participant Brad Kelly said the intensive course provided valuable opportunities to build skills and connect with researchers at the forefront of livestock technology.

"It was an intensive week, but I learned an incredible amount in a short time," Mr Kelly said.

"I'm leaving with new ideas, practical skills and resources that I can apply directly to my own research."

Mr Kelly said hearing from researchers and fellow participants from different institutions and disciplines was a highlight of the program.

"It was valuable to learn how other researchers approach animal behaviour questions and to share ideas across different areas of expertise," he said.

The program concluded with a graduation and awards event at Shalako Farms, recognising participants for their coding, perseverance and technical achievements.

The intensive school is the latest collaboration between CQUniversity and Oklahoma State University, strengthening international partnerships in digital agriculture and supporting advances in precision livestock management.

The next Cows&Code Intensive School will be hosted in Rockhampton in August 2027, bringing the international program to CQUniversity's home region.
